How Many Washes Does a Hotel Sheet Really Last?

"How many washes will it last?" is the question every hotel buyer asks. It is also the one question nobody can answer honestly without knowing your laundry.

Anyone who gives you a number before asking how you wash is guessing. This post explains what decides sheet life, how to work out how hard your sheets are working, and how to get a number you can use.

What decides how long a sheet lasts

Six things decide sheet life: wash temperature, chemicals, drying and ironing, stain handling, fabric quality and how staff handle it
Five of the six happen in your laundry or on your floor. Only one is in the sheet.

Only one of the six is about the sheet. The other five are about what happens to it.

  • Wash temperature. Hotter and longer washes age cotton faster. Some stains need heat, so it is a trade-off.
  • Chemicals. Strong bleach and harsh detergent wear fibre away a little each cycle.
  • Drying and ironing. High heat and hard pressing wear the surface and the hems.
  • Stain handling. A sheet washed twice for one stain has used two washes and only one night.
  • Fabric quality. Fibre, yarn, weave and stitching set how much wear a sheet can take. This is where a better set earns its price.
  • How staff handle it. Dragging sheets on the floor, tearing them on bed corners or using them as rags all shorten life.
  • This is why two hotels can wash the same sheet and retire it at very different ages.

How many washes a year are your sets doing?

Before you can talk about wash life, you need to know how fast your sets are using it up. The sum is simple:

Washes per set per year = rooms x occupancy x days, divided by the sets you hold.

A 100-room hotel at 70 percent occupancy, 365 days, 300 sets at par 3: about 85 washes per set a year
A worked example. Use your own room count, occupancy and par level.

For a 100-room hotel at 70 percent occupancy, with sheets changed every night and 300 sets (par 3, which means three sets per bed):

  • 100 rooms x 70 percent x 365 nights = 25,550 uses a year
  • 25,550 divided by 300 sets = about 85 washes per set per year
  • So a set that survives 170 washes lasts two years. A set that survives 255 lasts three. A set that gives out at 100 lasts about 14 months.

If you change sheets at each checkout and not each night, the number can be half that. A stay of two nights means one change, not two. Check your own brand standard.

Not sure what par level you hold? Our par level calculator works it out. We explain par in how many towels does a hotel need.

How to find your own wash life

Here are three ways, from fastest to most careful.

    1. Look at your retirement records. How many sets did you retire in the last 12 months, and how old was each? Divide the age in washes. If you do not track this, start now. It will save you money.

    2. Run a wash trial. Wash a sample the way your laundry washes. Measure shrinkage, check the hems and look for thin patches after each stage. We show the method in how to test a towel sample at your desk. It works for sheets too.

    3. Ask for a lab test. A wash test to ISO 6330 shows shrinkage and strength after a set number of washes. It gives you a fair comparison between two fabrics, though not a promise about your laundry.

    What not to do

Do not take a supplier's wash life as a promise. Treat it as a claim to test.

Do not compare wash lives from different laundries. A sheet that lasts 200 washes in a gentle laundry may last 120 in a harsh one.

Do not forget to count the wash that did not follow a night of use. Re-washes for stains add up.

    Next step

Once you have your own number, put it into the cost per wash calculator and compare quotes properly. Read the sum behind it in cost per wash: why the cheapest sheet can cost you more. If you want samples to test, send us your spec.
