Cost Per Wash: Why the Cheapest Sheet Can Cost You More

Two sheet sets arrive in quotes. One is $6.50. The other is $9.50. Most buyers pick the first one, because $3 is $3.

That is a fair way to decide if both sets last the same time. They rarely do. A sheet is not something you buy once. You wash it, dry it, fold it and put it back on a bed, again and again, until it wears out. So the price you pay at the start is only the first part of what it costs.

The sum

Divide the price of a set by the number of washes it survives. That is the purchase cost per wash.

Set A costs $6.50 and lasts 100 washes, so 6.5 cents a wash. Set B costs $9.50 and lasts 200 washes, so 4.75 cents a wash. Set B must last 146 washes to break even
The wash lives are made up to show the sum. Use your own.

In the example:

  • Set A: $6.50 divided by 100 washes is 6.5 cents a wash.
  • Set B: $9.50 divided by 200 washes is 4.75 cents a wash.
  • Set B costs $3 more on the invoice and about a quarter less on every wash.

Those wash lives are not data. We made them up so you can see how the sum works. We come back to why below.

    The break-even point

This is the useful part. Set B costs 46 percent more than Set A ($9.50 divided by $6.50 is 1.46). So Set B has to last 46 percent longer just to break even. If Set A lasts 100 washes, Set B must last 146.

That turns a vague argument into a test you can check. You no longer ask "is the better sheet worth it?" You ask "will it last 46 percent longer in my laundry?" Then you go and find out.

If you pay 20 percent more for a set, it has to last 20 percent longer. If you pay 10 percent more, 10 percent longer. A small price gap needs only a small gain in life.

What the price per set does not show

The purchase is not the only cost of a wash. Each wash also costs you water, energy, detergent and labour. Laundries bill by weight, so a heavier sheet costs more to wash every time. That cost is the same for a set that lasts 100 washes and one that lasts 200, per wash. But a sheet that dies early also means a replacement order, a gap on the shelf and, sometimes, a guest who gets a thin sheet.

We work out the full picture in the 3-year cost of one hotel bed. The short version: laundry is the biggest number, so what matters most is how many nights you get out of each set before you buy the next.

Why you must use your own wash life

You will see claims like "lasts 200 washes". Treat them with care. How long a sheet lasts depends on your wash temperature, your chemicals, how hard you dry and press, how stains are treated and how staff handle it. Two hotels can wash the same sheet and get very different lives.

So take the number from your own laundry. Look at how many sets you retired in the last year and how old they were. Or run a wash trial on a sample. We explain how in how many washes does a hotel sheet really last.

How to use this when you compare quotes

    1. Put each quote on one line: price per set, and your best guess for washes.

    2. Divide to get cost per wash.

    3. For the dearer set, work out the break-even: its price divided by the cheaper set's price, times the cheaper set's wash life.

    4. Ask whether the dearer set could plausibly beat that in your laundry. Ask the supplier for a sample so you can test it.

Our cost per wash calculator does the sums for two specs at once, including laundry cost and a break-even wash life.

    Where we come in

Our sheet sets are priced from $5 to $28 a set FOB Cochin, depending on thread count. See the hotel linen price guide for the bands. We would rather you test a sample than trust a number from us. Ask for samples and a quote, and run the wash test before you order.
