Unit price is what you pay once; cost per wash is what the linen costs you every day it is in the building. This calculator adds the opening fill, the replacements as pieces wear out, and the laundry billed by the kilo, then tells you how many washes the cheaper option would need to survive to break even.

Cost Per Wash Calculator

Procurement compares quotes on unit price because that is the number on the quote. It is the wrong number. Put two specs in here and see what each actually costs across the years you will own it.

Cost Per Wash Comparator

Unit price is what you pay once. Cost per wash is what you actually spend. Put two specs side by side.

Every figure above is an assumption you should replace with your own. Laundry is billed per kilogram, so the heavier spec is charged more on every cycle - this calculation holds that against it rather than quietly favouring the premium option. Work out piece weight from GSM.

Why this calculator argues against us as often as for us

We sell heavier linen. A tool built to sell it would leave laundry weight out of the arithmetic, because laundry is billed by the kilogram and a 600 GSM towel costs about a fifth more to wash than a 500 GSM one - every cycle, for its whole life. Leaving that out would hand the result to the premium spec before you typed anything.

It is in. So is the opening fill, which scales with unit price and makes the expensive option start from behind. In a property with high turnover, hard water or frequent linen loss, the lighter spec often wins outright on these numbers, and the calculator will say so.

Replacements / yr = pieces × washes per year ÷ wash life

Laundry / yr = pieces × washes per year × kg per piece × cost per kg

Total = opening fill + years × (replacement + laundry)

Cost per use = total ÷ (pieces × washes per year × years)

The input nobody can honestly give you

Wash life is the number the whole comparison turns on, and it is the one number a supplier cannot credibly supply. Durability claims are marketing, and ours would be too. What actually determines it is your wash chemistry, water hardness, temperature, extraction and how your team handles stain treatment - variables that sit in your building, not in our mill.

Two sources are worth trusting. The first is your own laundry's retirement records over the last couple of years, which is the real answer for your property. The second is a wash trial to ISO 6330 on a sample before you commit to a run, which is what we would recommend to anyone changing spec.

Common questions

What is cost per wash and why does it matter more than unit price?+

Cost per wash spreads everything you spend on a piece of linen - the purchase, the replacements when it wears out, and the laundry to keep it in service - across the number of times it actually gets used. Unit price is a single number you pay once at the start. Cost per wash is what the linen costs you every day it is in the building. Two towels quoted 80 cents apart can land on opposite sides of a budget once wash life and laundry weight are in the arithmetic, and the cheaper one is not always the one that wins.

How many washes should a hotel bath towel survive?+

There is no honest universal answer, and anyone giving you one is selling something. It depends on the wash chemistry, the water hardness, the temperature, the extraction and drying cycle, and how the property handles stain treatment. What matters is that you use your own figure. Pull the retirement records from your laundry for the last two years, or run a wash trial to ISO 6330 on a sample before committing to a run. The calculator takes whatever number you have; it does not invent one for you.

Does a heavier towel cost more to launder?+

Yes, and this calculator holds it against the heavier spec rather than ignoring it. Commercial laundries bill by the kilogram, so a 600 GSM bath towel costs roughly 20% more to wash than a 500 GSM towel of the same dimensions, on every single cycle, for its whole life. Over a three-year horizon that is a real number. A heavier towel has to earn its place on durability and guest experience, not on weight alone.

What is the break-even wash life?+

It is the number of wash cycles the cheaper-upfront option would have to survive for the two options to cost the same over your horizon. It reframes the decision usefully: instead of arguing about whether a premium spec is worth 80 cents more, you get a concrete test - the budget towel needs to last, say, 310 washes rather than the 120 you entered. Then you go and check whether it plausibly can.

How do I work out how many washes a year my linen gets?+

Start from turns, not from days. Multiply your rooms by occupancy by the change frequency your brand standard sets, then divide by the pieces in circulation. A property running par 3 with daily towel changes at 70% occupancy puts each towel through roughly 100 to 130 cycles a year. The par level calculator works out the circulation figure if you do not have it to hand.

Should I include the opening fill in the comparison?+

Yes, and this calculator does. The opening order is real money and it scales with unit price, so leaving it out flatters the expensive option. Including it means a premium spec has to recover a larger day-one outlay before it starts winning, which is the honest way round.

Does buying heavier linen always work out cheaper in the end?+

No. That is exactly why the tool takes your numbers rather than supplying them. Heavier linen costs more to buy and more to launder on every cycle, so it only wins if the extra durability is real and large enough to cover both. In properties with high turnover, aggressive stain chemistry or frequent linen loss, a lighter spec often wins outright. Run it with your own retirement data and let the arithmetic decide.

What is your minimum order — can I buy just one carton?+

Our standard minimum is 500 pcs trial / 2,000 pcs wholesale for towels, 200 sets trial (wholesale threshold to confirm) for bed linen, and 200 pcs trial (wholesale threshold to confirm) for bathrobes. "Per SKU" means per size and colour combination. We can run 500 pcs (trial run, small premium) for a genuine first trial. Below roughly 300 pieces we are honestly the wrong supplier — a loom set-up and a dye lot cost the same whether you order 100 towels or 1,000, so the per-piece price stops making sense for you. At that size a local wholesaler will serve you better, and we would rather tell you that than waste your week.

How much does a sample cost and how fast do I get it?+

2 free pcs per spec — you pay courier only. Courier from Kerala to most countries runs $35–$60 via DHL or FedEx and arrives in 7–14 days. We recommend asking for two GSM weights side by side — most buyers change their mind about weight once they hold both. Sample cost is credited back against your first bulk order.

How do I pay, and what protects me if the goods are wrong?+

30% advance, 70% against B/L copy — so 70% of your money is still with you when the goods leave the port. You get photos of the actual production run before the balance is due. You can also appoint a third-party inspector (SGS, Bureau Veritas or Intertek, roughly $300–$500 for a single inspection) to check the goods at our factory before you release the balance; we will schedule it and give them access. If a shipment does not match the approved sample, we remake or credit it.

Do I need an import licence to buy this?+

In most countries, no — not for commercial quantities of ordinary cotton textiles. In the US, UK, EU, UAE, Australia and Canada, a business tax or VAT registration number is normally all that is required, and your freight forwarder or customs broker files the entry for you. Some markets do require an importer registration (Saudi Arabia and Egypt among them). Tell us your country and we will tell you plainly what you need before you commit any money.

What does it cost delivered to my door, not FOB?+

FOB means the price to get goods loaded onto the ship at Cochin port — freight, duty and local delivery are on top. As a rough guide, sea freight adds $0.15–$0.45 per towel on a shared container and less on a full one; import duty is typically 6–12% depending on your country. We quote CIF (freight included) or DDP (everything included, delivered to your address) on request, so you can compare one final number instead of guessing. Our landed-cost calculator does the arithmetic for you.

Can I order without any certification requirement?+

Yes, absolutely. Certification is not a hoop we make you jump through — it is simply how we already manufacture. Every piece is made under OEKO-TEX Standard 100 whether you ask for the certificate or not, and it costs you nothing extra. If you do not need the paperwork, do not ask for it and nothing about your order or price changes. Buyers who supply hotel groups or EU retailers usually want the documents; an Airbnb host or a salon owner almost never does.

How long from order to goods in my hands?+

30–45 days for production, plus shipping. Sea freight is 10–16 days to the Gulf, 22–30 days to Europe and the UK, 28–38 days to the US east coast, and 18–25 days to Australia. Air freight cuts that to 3–5 days but costs roughly 6–8× more per kilo, so it is worth it for samples and rarely worth it for bulk. Plan on about 8–10 weeks door to door for a first sea shipment.

How do I know you are a real factory and not a middleman?+

Fair question, and one you should ask everyone. We are a manufacturer in Kerala, India — you can video-call the floor during Indian working hours with no notice, and we will walk the looms and the dye house for you. We will also give you our IEC (Import Export Code) and GST registration to verify independently. A trading company will usually decline a live unscheduled video call, which is the cheapest test you can run on any supplier.

Can you put my brand on it?+

Yes. Woven labels, printed care labels, embroidered logos, custom packaging and retail barcodes are all standard. Logo embroidery adds about $0.30–$0.60 per piece; a custom woven label adds about $0.06–$0.12. Private-label MOQ is 2,000 pieces per SKU rather than 500, because the label and packaging themselves carry a minimum run.
