Why Two 300 Thread Count Sheets Cost Different Amounts

Why Two 300 Thread Count Sheets Cost Different Amounts

You ask three suppliers for a 300 thread count sheet set. The quotes come back at $5, $8 and $12. All three say 300 TC. What is going on?

Thread count is a count of threads in a square inch of fabric. It tells you how tightly a sheet is woven. It does not tell you what the threads are made of, how they were spun, or how the sheet was finished. Those things decide the price. They also decide how the sheet feels and how long it lasts.

For where thread count matters and where it does not, read the thread count vs GSM guide.

Eight things behind the price gap: cotton fibre, yarn, weave and finish, fabric weight, stitching and hem, dye and shade, packing and labels, order size
Thread count is one number. These eight sit behind the gap.

1. Cotton fibre

Cotton fibre comes in different lengths and grades. Longer, cleaner fibre spins into a smoother, stronger yarn. Shorter fibre makes a fuzzier, weaker one. Better fibre costs more at the start and often lasts longer in the wash.

2. Yarn

The yarn is the thread you weave with. Fine, even yarn takes more time and care to make. An uneven yarn can be woven to the same count but will feel rougher and pill sooner. Our guide to single ply vs double ply explains one of the choices.

3. Weave and finish

Percale is plain, crisp and cool. Sateen is smoother with a slight sheen. How the cloth is finished after weaving sets how soft and crisp it feels. Finishing takes more steps for some sheets than others. See percale vs sateen for hotels.

4. Fabric weight

Two sheets at the same thread count can weigh different amounts per square metre. More cotton means more cost, and often more life. It also means more cost per wash, because laundries bill by weight. The GSM calculator shows what a set should weigh.

5. Stitching and hem

A tight, even stitch and a strong hem take more labour. They also decide where a sheet fails first. A hem that opens in month four is a replacement you did not plan for.

6. Dye and shade

White is the simplest. Dyed shades cost more, and they need colour control so that batch two matches batch one. Dyeing the yarn before weaving costs more than dyeing the finished cloth, and is often chosen where colour has to hold. See yarn-dyed vs piece-dyed bed linen.

7. Packing and labels

A plain bulk pack costs less than a boxed retail set with a printed wrap. Neither is wrong. It depends on whether the set goes on a hotel shelf or a shop shelf. Ask what is included in the price.

8. Order size

A bigger run spreads the cost of setting up a loom or a dye lot across more sets. The price per set can come down as the quantity goes up. See how volume changes price.

How to compare three quotes fairly

Do not compare the thread count. Ask each supplier for the same four things:

  • Cotton: 100% cotton or blend, and the fibre grade if they know it.
  • Weight: grams per square metre, or the weight of a finished set.
  • Finished size: after washing, not before.
  • Samples: two pieces, so you can test them.
  • Then run the wash test. A sheet that costs $5 and passes is a good deal. A sheet that costs $5 and thins out in 40 washes is not. Use the cost per wash sum to compare what you get.

    Where our prices sit

Our 300 thread count percale sets sit in the $8 to $11 FOB Cochin band, with a trial minimum of 200 sets. See 300 thread count sheets and the price guide. If you have a quote that is much lower, ask the questions above before you decide.
