Import Duty & FTA Calculator
Most landed-cost tools quote one duty rate and stop. This one shows you two: what you pay claiming nothing, and what the trade agreement between India and your market could take off - along with the single document that decides which number you get.
Import Duty & FTA Advantage Checker
What you pay claiming nothing, what a trade agreement could take off, and the one document that decides which.

Why the calculator shows you two rates
An importer pays the most-favoured-nation rate by default. That is the number to budget against, and it is what the headline landed cost above uses. The preferential rate is what you become entitled to once your shipment qualifies as originating and you lodge the claim correctly - it is upside you secure with paperwork, not a discount that arrives on its own.
We keep them separate deliberately. A tool that quietly applies a preferential rate is telling you your container costs less than it will if the origin certificate is missing, and on a 40ft load that gap is thousands of dollars discovered at the worst possible moment.
CIF = FOB + freight + insurance
Duty = CIF × rate
VAT / GST = (CIF + duty) × rate
Landed = CIF + duty + clearance + VAT
Working out the weight first? Use the GSM calculator. Filling a container? The container loading calculator turns pieces into cartons and CBM.
The part that decides whether you get the preferential rate
Rules of Origin are what stop an agreement being a flag of convenience. Goods merely shipped, repacked or trans-shipped through India do not qualify. Textile chapters typically apply a substantial-transformation test - in practice, manufacture from yarn, meaning the weaving, processing and making-up all happen in India.
We manufacture in Kerala from Indian yarn, which is the profile these rules are written around, and we issue the origin documentation set with each shipment. The determination still sits with the declaration your broker files, and the records behind it need to survive an audit after clearance.

The other half of your landed cost

Common questions
How much import duty do I pay on towels from India?+
It depends entirely on where you are importing to, and the spread is wide. The UAE and the rest of the GCC apply a 5% Common External Tariff. The UK Global Tariff puts terry towels at roughly 8%. The EU common external tariff runs around 12%. The USA sits near 9.6%. Canada is the outlier at roughly 18%. Australia is already duty-free for Indian goods under ECTA. Enter your destination above and the calculator gives you the rate and the cash figure on your actual shipment.
Does a trade agreement automatically make my import duty-free?+
No, and this is the single most expensive misunderstanding in the trade. An agreement changes the rate you are entitled to claim, not the rate you are charged by default. Two things have to happen: the goods must qualify as originating under the agreement's Rules of Origin, which for textiles normally means manufacture from yarn in India, and the claim has to be lodged with your import declaration supported by the right proof of origin. Miss either and you pay the full tariff. Claims are also auditable after clearance, so a retrospective denial means repaying the duty with interest.
Which trade agreements cover Indian bed linen and towels?+
Several, and they are not equivalent. The India-UAE CEPA and the India-Australia ECTA are in force and remove duty on qualifying home-textile lines today. The India-UK CETA commits to eliminating tariffs on the large majority of Indian textile lines, with staging that decides your actual rate line by line. The India-Oman CEPA targets the same outcome. The India-EFTA TEPA covers Switzerland and Norway, though both already apply little duty to these lines. The EU GSP and the UK DCTS are unilateral schemes rather than negotiated agreements, so the granting country can vary or withdraw them. The calculator names which one applies to your destination and what document it needs.
Do bathrobes attract the same duty as towels?+
Usually not, and getting this wrong is costly. A terry bathrobe is a garment, not bath linen. It classifies in the apparel chapters, commonly 6208.91 or 6207.91 woven and 6108.91 or 6107.91 knitted, rather than under 6302 with the towelling it is made from. Apparel rates run above the home-textile lines in most Western markets, and trade agreements schedule the apparel chapters separately, so a preference that zero-rates your towels may not cover your robes. Select bathrobes above and the calculator prices the apparel column instead.
Does an FTA remove import VAT as well as duty?+
No. A free trade agreement changes customs duty only. Import VAT, GST or consumption tax continues to apply to the CIF value plus whatever duty remains. There is a second-order benefit though: removing duty lowers the base VAT is charged on, so the cash effect is slightly larger than the duty figure alone. In the UK, VAT-registered importers can use postponed VAT accounting to declare and recover it on the same return rather than paying at the border, and the Dutch Article 23 licence does something similar.
What proof of origin do I need to claim preference?+
It varies by agreement. The EU wants a REX statement on origin from a registered Indian exporter. The UK CETA uses a statement on origin under its own origin procedures, with DCTS as the fallback. The UAE and Oman CEPAs each require their own Certificate of Origin against separate origin protocols, so a claim valid for a Dubai import is not automatically valid for a Muscat one. Singapore uses Form AI under CECA and Japan uses Form JI. The calculator names the specific document for your destination.
Why does the calculator show the full MFN duty when an agreement exists?+
Because that is what you pay if you claim nothing, and it is the honest planning basis. We show the preferential rate alongside it as a saving you have to go and claim, with the document named, rather than quietly applying a rate your shipment might not qualify for. Where an agreement is signed but staging still decides your line, we say so instead of showing zero. Budget the MFN figure and treat the saving as upside you secure with paperwork.
What is your minimum order — can I buy just one carton?+
Our standard minimum is 500 pcs trial / 2,000 pcs wholesale for towels, 200 sets trial (wholesale threshold to confirm) for bed linen, and 200 pcs trial (wholesale threshold to confirm) for bathrobes. "Per SKU" means per size and colour combination. We can run 500 pcs (trial run, small premium) for a genuine first trial. Below roughly 300 pieces we are honestly the wrong supplier — a loom set-up and a dye lot cost the same whether you order 100 towels or 1,000, so the per-piece price stops making sense for you. At that size a local wholesaler will serve you better, and we would rather tell you that than waste your week.
How much does a sample cost and how fast do I get it?+
2 free pcs per spec — you pay courier only. Courier from Kerala to most countries runs $35–$60 via DHL or FedEx and arrives in 7–14 days. We recommend asking for two GSM weights side by side — most buyers change their mind about weight once they hold both. Sample cost is credited back against your first bulk order.
How do I pay, and what protects me if the goods are wrong?+
30% advance, 70% against B/L copy — so 70% of your money is still with you when the goods leave the port. You get photos of the actual production run before the balance is due. You can also appoint a third-party inspector (SGS, Bureau Veritas or Intertek, roughly $300–$500 for a single inspection) to check the goods at our factory before you release the balance; we will schedule it and give them access. If a shipment does not match the approved sample, we remake or credit it.
Do I need an import licence to buy this?+
In most countries, no — not for commercial quantities of ordinary cotton textiles. In the US, UK, EU, UAE, Australia and Canada, a business tax or VAT registration number is normally all that is required, and your freight forwarder or customs broker files the entry for you. Some markets do require an importer registration (Saudi Arabia and Egypt among them). Tell us your country and we will tell you plainly what you need before you commit any money.
What does it cost delivered to my door, not FOB?+
FOB means the price to get goods loaded onto the ship at Cochin port — freight, duty and local delivery are on top. As a rough guide, sea freight adds $0.15–$0.45 per towel on a shared container and less on a full one; import duty is typically 6–12% depending on your country. We quote CIF (freight included) or DDP (everything included, delivered to your address) on request, so you can compare one final number instead of guessing. Our landed-cost calculator does the arithmetic for you.
Can I order without any certification requirement?+
Yes, absolutely. Certification is not a hoop we make you jump through — it is simply how we already manufacture. Every piece is made under OEKO-TEX Standard 100 whether you ask for the certificate or not, and it costs you nothing extra. If you do not need the paperwork, do not ask for it and nothing about your order or price changes. Buyers who supply hotel groups or EU retailers usually want the documents; an Airbnb host or a salon owner almost never does.
How long from order to goods in my hands?+
30–45 days for production, plus shipping. Sea freight is 10–16 days to the Gulf, 22–30 days to Europe and the UK, 28–38 days to the US east coast, and 18–25 days to Australia. Air freight cuts that to 3–5 days but costs roughly 6–8× more per kilo, so it is worth it for samples and rarely worth it for bulk. Plan on about 8–10 weeks door to door for a first sea shipment.
How do I know you are a real factory and not a middleman?+
Fair question, and one you should ask everyone. We are a manufacturer in Kerala, India — you can video-call the floor during Indian working hours with no notice, and we will walk the looms and the dye house for you. We will also give you our IEC (Import Export Code) and GST registration to verify independently. A trading company will usually decline a live unscheduled video call, which is the cheapest test you can run on any supplier.
Can you put my brand on it?+
Yes. Woven labels, printed care labels, embroidered logos, custom packaging and retail barcodes are all standard. Logo embroidery adds about $0.30–$0.60 per piece; a custom woven label adds about $0.06–$0.12. Private-label MOQ is 2,000 pieces per SKU rather than 500, because the label and packaging themselves carry a minimum run.
