GSM means grams per square metre. It tells you how heavy and dense a towel is. Most hotels buy 500–600 GSM. Gym and travel towels are lighter, at 300–400 GSM. Spa towels go up to 650–800 GSM.

What Does GSM Mean in Terry Towels?
GSM is the weight of one square metre of fabric, in grams. In a terry towel, more GSM means more yarn in the loops. That changes four things:
- Thickness: more yarn makes a deeper, fuller pile.
- Weight per piece: a 70×140 cm bath towel at 500 GSM weighs about 490 g.
- Water it holds: more loops hold more water, but they take longer to dry.
- Feel: heavier towels feel more premium in the hand.
To find the weight of one towel, multiply length (cm) × width (cm) × GSM, then divide by 10,000. Or use the GSM calculator.
Labs test GSM by cutting a sample with a die and weighing it on a precise scale (ASTM D3776). Ask your supplier for a test report. A ±5% tolerance is normal.
GSM Range: 300–400 GSM (Lightweight - Gym, Travel, Promotional)
Best for: gyms, budget hotels, airline kits, promotional giveaways, sports and beach clubs.
These towels are light. They dry fast and wash easily in bulk. They pack small, so they suit travel kits. The loops are short, so they absorb enough for the job but don't feel plush.
- Gym towels: 300–350 GSM
- Promotional towels: 320–380 GSM
- Budget hotel rooms: 380–420 GSM
Buyer note: this range has the lowest price per piece and fits the most pieces in a container. For a gym chain, 350 GSM ring-spun cotton balances lifespan and cost well.
GSM Range: 450–550 GSM (Mid-Weight - Hotels, Everyday Home Use)
Best for: 3 and 4 star hotels, home use, mid-market retail, hotel chains.
Most hotel towels in the world sit in this range. They absorb well and still dry in a normal industrial cycle.
- 3-star hotel bath towels: 450–480 GSM
- Standard hotel orders: 500 GSM, the most common spec
- Home retail: 500–550 GSM
Buyer note: 500 GSM is the reference point. When you compare suppliers, ask each one for a 500 GSM sample first. Then compare feel, absorbency and weight.
GSM Range: 600–700 GSM (Premium - Five-Star Hotels, Spas)
Best for: 5-star hotels, resorts, boutique properties, premium retail.
These towels feel heavy and dense. The pile is taller and softer, and it holds a lot of water. They suit a high-end brand.
- 5-star hotel bath towels: 600–650 GSM
- Spa bath sheets: 650–700 GSM
- Department store retail: 600 GSM
Buyer note: at this weight, the yarn matters as much as the GSM. Ring-spun or zero-twist yarn at 600 GSM feels softer than standard combed cotton at the same weight. Put the yarn type in your spec, not just the GSM.
GSM Range: 700–800 GSM (Luxury - Bathrobes, High-End Hospitality)
Best for: luxury hotels, spa resorts, high-end retail.
This is the top of the range. A 70×140 cm bath towel at 700 GSM weighs about 690 g. The pile is very dense. These towels dry slowly and need gentler laundry cycles, so most hotels keep them for suites and spas.
- Luxury hotel bath towels: 700–750 GSM
- High-end gift sets: 750–800 GSM
Buyer note: zero-twist yarn is common at this weight. It feels softer than standard twisted yarn at the same GSM.
What Does Each GSM Mean? 300 to 800 GSM Explained
What does 300 GSM mean in a towel?
300 GSM is very light. It is thin, dries fast and holds little water. It suits gym towels, giveaways and budget retail, not hotel bathrooms.

What does 800 GSM mean in a towel?

How Suppliers Inflate GSM Claims - and How to Check
GSM disputes are one of the most common complaints after a first order from India. You can check GSM yourself in three steps.
Step 1
Cut a 10 × 10 cm square
Cut from the plain middle. A border or hem adds weight and gives a false high reading.
Step 2
Weigh it
Use a scale that reads to 0.1 g. Let the towel rest 24 hours in normal room air first.
Step 3
Multiply by 100
5.0 g × 100 =
500 GSM
A 10 × 10 cm square is 1/100 of a square metre. So its weight × 100 is the GSM.
Is the result fair?
A 500 GSM order may test from 475 to 525. That is the normal ±5%.
Inside the green band: a normal variation.
Below 475: a valid quality claim, not rounding.
Watch for these four things:
- Testing too early: a towel tested straight after finishing can read high. Ask for GSM tested after 24 hours in standard room conditions (ASTM D1776).
- Testing the border: a dobby border or heavy hem adds 15–20 GSM to a sample. The sample should come from the plain body.
- The ±5% rule: a 500 GSM towel may test from 475 to 525. Below 475 is a valid quality claim, not rounding.
- Large orders: above $10,000, book an independent AQL inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek or QIMA) with a GSM check included.
