Bathrobe GSM, Explained
GSM (grams per square metre) is the single most important spec when sourcing bathrobes - it determines weight, absorbency, drying time, and perceived luxury. This guide breaks down the three standard GSM tiers used across the industry and gives a full adult and children's size chart, so you can brief your bathrobe manufacturer precisely.
GSM Tiers by Use Case
| GSM Range | Tier | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| 300–350 GSM | Lightweight / Summer | Spa kimono robes, warm-climate hotels, quick-dry day use, children's robes |
| 400–450 GSM | Standard Hotel | Mid-tier and business hotels, resort in-room amenity, boutique retail |
| 500–600 GSM | Luxury | 5-star hotels, spa flagship robes, premium gift and retail programmes |
Bathrobe Styles: Shawl Collar, Kimono, Hooded & Waffle
Collar/closure style and fabric weave are independent choices - any style below can be made in terry, waffle or velour at the GSM ranges above.
Shawl Collar
A continuous rolled collar band with no notch. The 5-star hotel and spa standard - sits flat, looks tailored, works for both men's and women's sizing. Available in terry, waffle or velour.
Kimono
Flat lapel, sash-tie closure, no hood. Reads lighter and more spa-casual than a shawl collar - the usual choice for warm-climate resorts and women's retail robes.
Hooded
A hood added to any terry, waffle or velour construction - popular for spa, poolside and kids' robes where quick hair-drying matters more than hotel-room formality. Adds a small per-piece cost for the extra panel.
Waffle
Not a collar style but a weave: an open, honeycomb-textured weave that is lighter and dries faster than terry, at 280–450 GSM. Can be made in shawl collar, kimono or hooded cut. See our dedicated waffle bathrobe page for the full specification.

Frequently Asked Questions
What GSM bathrobe should I buy?
For most hotel and hospitality programmes, 400–450 GSM is the standard choice - a good balance of absorbency, drying time, and cost. Choose 300–350 GSM for warm-climate properties, spa kimono robes, or children's robes where lighter weight matters more than plushness. Choose 500–600 GSM for 5-star hotels and luxury gift/retail robes where a heavier, more substantial feel is the priority.
What does GSM mean for bathrobes?
GSM stands for grams per square metre - the weight of the fabric. Higher GSM means a denser, heavier weave with more absorbent fibre per unit area, giving a plusher hand-feel. Lower GSM means a lighter fabric that dries faster and packs smaller, but is less absorbent and less substantial to the touch.
Is a higher GSM bathrobe always better quality?
Not necessarily - GSM should match the use case, not just be maximised. A 550 GSM robe is excellent for a 5-star hotel room but impractical for a fast-turnover spa (too slow to dry) or a warm climate. Fibre quality (combed vs carded cotton), weave consistency, and stitching also determine perceived quality independent of GSM.
How do I measure a bathrobe for size?
The two key measurements are chest width (measured flat, armpit to armpit, then doubled) and full length (from the base of the collar to the hem). Our size chart above gives standard ranges in centimetres for both kids' and adult sizing - request a physical sample if you need exact garment measurements for your specific market.
Do kids' bathrobes use the same GSM as adult robes?
No - kids' bathrobes typically use lighter 300–400 GSM cotton terry, since children's smaller body mass and skin sensitivity don't require the heavier absorbency of adult hotel-grade robes. See our dedicated kids' bathrobe manufacturer page for full specifications.
What GSM is used for velour bathrobes vs terry bathrobes?
Velour bathrobes (plush exterior, terry lining) typically run 400–550 GSM. Pure terry bathrobes span the full 350–600 GSM range depending on positioning. Waffle bathrobes are generally lighter, at 280–450 GSM, due to their more open, textured weave.
Shawl collar or kimono collar - which should I order?
A shawl collar (a continuous rolled band without a notch) is the standard for 5-star hotel and spa robes - it sits flat, looks tailored, and works for both men's and women's sizing. A kimono collar (flat lapel, sash-tie closure, no hood) reads lighter and more spa-casual, and is the usual choice for warm-climate resorts and women's retail robes. Both are made at the same GSM ranges above; the collar is a styling choice, not a weight choice.
Do you make hooded bathrobes?
Yes - a hood can be added to any of the terry, waffle or velour constructions above, typically for spa, poolside and kids' robes where quick hair-drying matters more than hotel-room formality. Hooded robes add a small per-piece cost for the extra panel and stitching; state it in your RFQ so the quote reflects it.
Microfiber or cotton bathrobe for a bulk order?
Cotton terry and velour (the GSM ranges above) are what Anabyn supplies - natural fibre, breathable, and what hotel and spa buyers expect for guest-facing robes. Microfiber (polyester) robes dry faster and are lighter to ship, but are a different product with a different hand-feel; if your programme specifically needs microfiber, say so in your RFQ so we can confirm it against the current specialist-unit range rather than assume cotton.
Bathrobe fabrics compared: terry, waffle, velour, microfibre, lined
Velour is terry whose loops have been sheared off one side. The cut face is smooth and has a sheen, but it absorbs less water than the loop side, which is why velour robes often keep terry loops on the inside.
Cotton bathrobes shrink like towels. Ask for a pre-washed robe and check the washed size against your chart.

| Fabric | Feel and weight | Absorbency | Dries | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Terry | Plush loops, heavier | High | Slower | Hotel guest rooms, cooler climates |
| Waffle | Honeycomb, lighter | Good | Fast | Spas, resorts, warm climates |
| Velour | Sheared terry, smooth face, plush | Lower on the cut face | Medium | Luxury guest rooms, outer layer |
| Microfibre | Light, dense, slick | High for its weight | Very fast | Gyms, travel, gifts |
| Lined (waffle outside, terry inside) | Smooth outside, loops inside | High | Medium | Premium spa and suite robes |
Shawl collar, kimono and hooded: which collar?
A shawl collar is one continuous rolled collar that frames the neck and gives a heavier, classic look. A kimono style is a flat wrap with a straight front, lighter and cheaper to make. A hooded robe adds a hood for pool, beach and kids. Collar style changes cutting and cost, so state it on the order.
