OEKO-TEX vs GOTS: Which Certification Do You Need?
What each certification covers · Who requires which · Cost premium · Availability in India
Two Different Certifications — Two Different Things
OEKO-TEX and GOTS are often confused because both relate to textile safety, but they certify very different things. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certifies that a finished product is free from harmful substances. GOTS certifies that the entire supply chain — from cotton farm to finished product — uses organic fibres and avoids toxic processing chemicals. Understanding the difference is essential when specifying linen for hotels, healthcare, or retail.
OEKO-TEX vs GOTS: Side-by-Side Comparison
| Factor | OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | GOTS |
|---|---|---|
| What It Certifies | The finished textile product is free from harmful substances (tested for 100+ substances). | The textile is made from certified organic fibres AND processed without toxic chemicals throughout the entire supply chain. |
| Scope | Product-level. Tests the final product regardless of raw material or process. | Full supply chain. From farm (certified organic cotton) to finished product (processing, dyeing, sewing). |
| Organic Cotton Claim | Does NOT certify organic cotton. An OEKO-TEX product may use conventional cotton. | Requires certified organic cotton (at least 70% organic fibre for "made with organic" label; 95%+ for "organic" label). |
| Availability in India | Very widely available. Most quality Indian textile manufacturers hold OEKO-TEX Standard 100. | Available but less common. Major GOTS clusters in Gujarat (cotton growing) and Tamil Nadu (processing). |
| Cost Premium | Low premium (5–10%). Testing cost is modest; widely held. | Higher premium (15–30%+). Organic cotton raw material is more expensive; full supply chain audit required. |
| Who Requires It | Hotels (guest safety), retailers (product liability), hospitals, aged care buyers. | Organic/natural brands, B-Corp companies, eco-retailers, buyers making organic claims. |
| Verification | Product testing by accredited laboratory. Annual renewal. | Full supply chain audit by GOTS-approved certification body. Annual inspection at every stage. |
| Logo Use | OEKO-TEX Standard 100 hang tag or label on product. | GOTS logo on product. Can be used in marketing as "organic" claim. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need OEKO-TEX or GOTS certification for hotel linen?
For most hotels, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is sufficient and is the industry standard for hotel linen procurement. It certifies the linen is free from harmful substances that could affect guest health. GOTS is required only if your hotel makes specific organic cotton claims in marketing or if your ESG policy requires certified organic supply chain. Most 3–5 star hotels specify OEKO-TEX; eco-lodges, wellness resorts, and hotels with strong sustainability positioning may specify GOTS.
Can a manufacturer have both OEKO-TEX and GOTS certification?
Yes. Many quality Indian manufacturers hold both certifications — OEKO-TEX for their standard cotton product range and GOTS for their organic cotton product range. The certifications are complementary: OEKO-TEX covers harmful substance testing for all products; GOTS covers the organic fibre and processing chain. Buyers wanting both safety and organic credentials can specify GOTS-certified products, which inherently also meet OEKO-TEX standards.
Is GOTS certification available in India?
Yes. India is the world's largest GOTS-certified organic cotton producer. Major GOTS certification clusters are in Gujarat (organic cotton farming and ginning), Tirupur and Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu — spinning, knitting, dyeing), and Thrissur/Kerala (weaving and finishing). India has more GOTS-certified facilities than any other country — making it the best source for GOTS-certified organic bed linen and towels.
What is OEKO-TEX Standard 100?
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a product safety certification for textiles, issued by OEKO-TEX Association. It tests the finished textile for 100+ harmful substances including: pesticide residues, formaldehyde, heavy metals, pH value, colour fastness, and allergenic dyes. Testing is done by an accredited laboratory; certification is renewed annually. It does not certify organic cotton or ethical manufacturing — only product safety.
